Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Players are granted the right to challenge particular calls made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
