During the celebrations, there was widespread violation of the designated hours across the metropolis, with insufficient monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.

Numerous recording stations throughout the capital showed air quality spiking around the night hours to some of the worst levels observed during celebrations in at least recent memory.

International Effects

The widespread use of pyrotechnics during Diwali also triggered a dispute with neighbouring the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani the Punjab region partly blaming deteriorating pollution levels in their urban centers on pollutants originating in across the border following the events.

Long-Standing Pollution Issue

Public health and economic toll on the nearly 33 million people calling home the capital region is substantial, according to multiple research.

The contaminated air results in elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung disorders, and can potentially cause cancer.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be responsible for ten thousand untimely deaths each year in Delhi.
