The Leading Record of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Takes the Top Spot.

At first glance, Lux may look more like a challenging university challenge than the latest popular music record by an artist who just had a previous hit was a collaboration with a global pop star. Split across 4 separate sections and voiced in 13 languages, this is a head-spinning classical-tinged album that delves into feminine mystique, religious transcendence, and corporal change, frequently by way of the prism of various women saints. The dissolution of a romance—a topic handled with grounded honesty elsewhere—is launched upwards here, supported by the lush presence of a full orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a vast list of contributors. The pure daring by itself makes the work of contemporary pop stars seem quite small.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to escape overly academic posturing feels almost miraculous, with complete credit belonging to Rosalía. Although this is not the first time project to blend historical sounds and the present, its ambitions are far greater here, and the tightrope walk far more dramatic. What truly raises her fourth album, outside of its complex melodies, rich arrangements, and inherent theatricality, proves to be a core sense of playfulness. Much like the legendary artist at her height, you find a wondrous quality to the vocalist's singing which sweeps the listener into its tornado. When she is breaking hearts in two, the listener nevertheless desire to stay alongside her through the journey.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

That playful energy comes forth brightly on a stunning piano-led ballad inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool for more than four moments. Suddenly, everything drops away, to reveal there's a spontaneous laugh followed by a comment before a hilariously exaggerated string crescendo thuds in like cartoonish force. The track then segues into the frenetic track driven by racing strings, a powerful choral group, and a surprise role from none other than Björk.

"The charm of this album is that you never quite understand—nor wish to predict—what you will go next."

Almost each song ends at a completely distinct place than how it began. A track examines the fleeting nature of celebrity over a featherlight orchestration only to disintegrating in electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a song echoing her previous trap-infused style begins off dark and sinister, featuring menacing beats, before sudden traditional rhythms and a heavenly chorus enter to smooth its jagged edges.

The Balance Of Art and Accessibility

A key balancing act on Lux involves navigating the line of bold experimentation and broad accessibility. It is no surprise that the album has achieved the artist's highest-charting work to break into the upper reaches of major charts: at its core a suite of truly catchy pop songs. A song performed entirely in the English language swells on a refrain that seems to gather more and more nagging melodies as it spirals skyward. This trick is repeated by another powerful track that expands and contracts, intertwining layered melodies like an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song charms via its jaunty, theatrical flair and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with pop culture honesty of other heartbreak songs, lambasting a former partner labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a painted-on smile, akin to a fairy-tale character concealing a knife: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You have the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Ears

Lux is pop on a maximalist level, a hungry reach for high artistry amid of impending artificial blankness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of glorious transcendence, creating an over-the-top drama that masterfully manages its inherent excess. It is a deep source of buried gems that takes patience to completely mine but never feels like a chore. Where some major pop albums of 2025 felt like a meager meal, this record offers a lavish feast at which the characters at the table, some intoxicated on sacred drink, flutter from conversations about historical saints, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and shared stories about hopeless men. It is a contemporary theatrical production from pop's most restlessly creative visionary.
