The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a major awards ceremony approaches, one notices a demand for the addition additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications successfully include many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
