Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these treatments must be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a intense return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you become starving," said one woman.

This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
