The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
