RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.
The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of approach shafts down to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.
British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.
"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," he said. "They were among numerous British troops deployed over the holidays. This action, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."
During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations estimates IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
