Astronaut Discloses Mental Health Struggle After ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and years of training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was buried under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the well-wishers whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She concluded that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the mission, including spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that passed the edge of space.
The diverse crew also comprised experts in different industries.
The enterprise behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
